LIMA The Lima Area Concert Band kicks off its expanded season on Saturday with a concert of epic proportions, as they Summon the Heroes to Veterans Memorial Civic Center.

Lucy Altstaetter was listening to the John Williams 96 piece for the Olympic Games, 'Summon the Heroes,' and she brought it to my attention. Its wonderful music, and we brainstormed and came up with an entire concert based around that theme, said John Hill, director of the 60-member band.

That piece is easily recognizable as NBCs primary music during coverage of the Olympic games.

We began thinking that music plays such an important part in identifying characters of importance, Hill said. So, the Lima Area Concert Band will perform the music that identifies a lot of heroes, from James Bond to Amelia Earhart.

These are really very challenging pieces, and weve spent a lot of time on it, Hill said. There is enough variety in this concert that there is always something you will like.

That variety can be seen in a lot of the bands upcoming performances for this season.

Members are performing at more venues than normal, even taking concerts to Wapakoneta and St. Marys.

The band will perform its always-popular shows, including the Sousa salute and the Cabaret, but will mix it up with a few new offerings.

Were doing a finale on the sounds of Broadway that we really think people will enjoy. All together, were probably up by about two new concerts this season, Hill said. I think this is going to be a very good year."
